Summary

3。5 Stars! Well written and interesting themes of culture and colonialism mixed with mystery, psychology and Steven King like horror。 I was definitely not expecting the book to go in the direction that it did。 Not a book for everyone- would recommend to those who are okay with a little paranormal twist in their reading!

For anyone who has a love of gothic horror and Henry James' Turn of the Screw, this book is for you。 A fresh take on a story of a woman trapped in a house and going mad。 Is she truly mad or perhaps is an underlying cause for her insanity? She writes frantically to her cousin, Noemi, to come and rescue her。 But when Noemi gets there, she falls into a similar trap and learns it is not so easy to leave High Place。 I thought this book was refreshing and fun。 It had great horror elements and suspense For anyone who has a love of gothic horror and Henry James' Turn of the Screw, this book is for you。 A fresh take on a story of a woman trapped in a house and going mad。 Is she truly mad or perhaps is an underlying cause for her insanity? 4。5 starsThis book is not for everyone it’s pretty bizarre (magic mushrooms) and out there but I LOVED IT! The atmosphere, color and imagery of this book top notch。 If you want to read something different, enjoy Gothic fiction and books about scary dreams and haunted houses, you should give this a read。 Excellent on audio

What I thought was going to be a ghost story took a much darker more interesting turn。 Although definitely a slow burn, the reveal takes a while but then things move quickly after that。

This was a very unusual read for me。 I usually stick with historical fiction。 I loved the juxtaposition of a very real issue with women being oppressed after marriage colliding with the fantasy element。 I tore through this。

Whoa, this took a very long time for me to finish。 I wanted to like it much more than I did。 I got bored in the middle a few times, but it was t terrible, just not as enthralling as I hoped。 The story would get interesting and then there would be a very long chapter or two of “background” info that didn’t feel as necessary, I wanted more of the interesting a d less of the background。

I forgot I attended university, so I had to read this for my class in just over one day。 I even had to buy eye drops because of how much I strained my eyes reading it this fast。 But wow。 One of the best books I have read this year; I cannot stop thinking about it。 It is 5 stars because it is a book that gives you so much unexplained nostalgia, it’s just sweet and spooky and I already want to read it again。

This was not what I expected, bundling historical setting, gothic mood, and a magical realism twist。 It was ok, but I guess not quite for me。

It is a rather inventive story that kept my attention for the full read。 The secret of High Place has to do with the exploitation of women, of native peoples by white interlopers。 This is a great story。

3。5 Stars。 Strange things are afoot at High Place。 Noemi's father requests her to go check in on Christina, her cousin, who was recently married to an older man and then whisked away to the country in a mansion whereby the family business was mining。 Christina hasn't been feeling well and wrote a cryptic letter。 Noemi goes to visit and stay for a while and finds Christina pretty much bedridden and her husband and his family being extremely over protective of the time the cousins spend together。 3。5 Stars。 Strange things are afoot at High Place。 Noemi's father requests her to go check in on Christina, her cousin, who was recently married to an older man and then whisked away to the country in a mansion whereby the family business was mining。 Christina hasn't been feeling well and wrote a cryptic letter。 Noemi goes to visit and stay for a while and finds Christina pretty much bedridden and her husband and his family being extremely over protective of the time the cousins spend together。 She also finds High Place hasn't been well taken care of and that it is dark, damp, and full of mold EVERYWHERE。 Noemi is told about all the house rules and that she is not to leave the property without being chaperoned。 Noemi has an independent spirit and this doesn't go over well。 Noemi does make friends with Francis, one of the Doyle family members。 Can she trust him? Sometimes she thinks so and other times she isn't quite sure。 The plot plods forward at a bit of an excruciating pace as Noemi figures out exactly what is going on。 The author attempts the slow burn, but it is too slow of a burn for me and there is a creepy factor, but falls flat for me。 It's just not that creative of a mystery and although it was well written as far as providing just the right amount of details and an easy flow of the text, it was a bit boring。 It wasn't that big of a thriller or mystery to me。 I finished and thought yawn, too predictable。 Meh。 Just not sure what all the hype is about after reading it。 。。。more

DNF。So, so very dull。 I made it about 75 pages in and was just so bored。

Sayema

Plot was ok (old man finds way to continue living a long time via mushrooms, murder and incest)。 Think the part I liked most was the protagonist, she wasnt the usual badass you see in books these days, nor the outsider, nor the super genius next door, she was just a really ordinary girl。 She wasnt perfect, flawed or perfectly flawed (ie where are weaknesses turn out to he strengths), she was just ordinary, which was very refreshing。

This was a disappointment for me。 I love creepy gothic stuff, and I loved the concept, but this just didn't grab me。 I didn't care for the characters, the prose was very meh for me, and the story just dragged on for me, and by the time things got truly creepy, I just didn't care。 I appreciated the critique of white colonialism and the Mexican setting, and the Main Reveal of how the house works (but at that point I didn't care), but apart from that this was just mehhh。 This was a disappointment for me。 I love creepy gothic stuff, and I loved the concept, but this just didn't grab me。 I didn't care for the characters, the prose was very meh for me, and the story just dragged on for me, and by the time things got truly creepy, I just didn't care。 I appreciated the critique of white colonialism and the Mexican setting, and the Main Reveal of how the house works (but at that point I didn't care), but apart from that this was just mehhh。 。。。more

The pacing and narration of this book was odd。 Maybe it was because I listened to the audiobook version, but I wanted more dialogue。 And while I usually enjoy books that don’t seem overly specific about the time period their in, I found that disconcerting in this book。 Overall the book was pretty good though。 Interesting enough characters and pretty good descriptions of places and things。

Not what I was expecting! Not bad—was a kind of cool “twist”!

Loved the hits of magical realism in this book。 It read like gothic horror with a dose of Stranger Things。 Didn't love the emphasis on sex, but it definitely adds to to the repulsive atmosphere of High Place。 An exciting take on gothic horror (with a much more interesting setting than creepy old England!)。 Loved the hits of magical realism in this book。 It read like gothic horror with a dose of Stranger Things。 Didn't love the emphasis on sex, but it definitely adds to to the repulsive atmosphere of High Place。 An exciting take on gothic horror (with a much more interesting setting than creepy old England!)。 。。。more

This felt like Alfred Hitchcock meets The Twilight Zone。 It’s truly the best description I can give。 It was very slow moving at first, but I was enjoying the creepy/suspenseful vibes I was getting。 Then it went real weird。 I haven’t read many books in this genre, so maybe my rating is unfair and I just am not a fan。 But it definitely felt like a very weird ride that was over hyped in my opinion。

Rounding up my 3。5 rating。

Great gothic atmosphere, pacing, foreboding, otherworldliness, controlling horror, and ending。 Loved it

Beautiful and scary。 Rich with symbolism and foreshadowing! This book takes you on a strange and wild ride, not unlike Alice in Wonderland if wonderland had been a haunted house。 I think this book is a wonderful choice for book clubs or literature classes because it is so full of symbolism and metaphor, yet the story doesn’t get weighed down and the prose remains stunning。 Highly recommend!!!!!Spoilers from here on!!!This book is classified as horror and uses the allegory of the house/the Doyle Beautiful and scary。 Rich with symbolism and foreshadowing!
